We rely heavily on texting to clients, staff and family members.  Oftentimes new agents ask me about texting.  They generally want to know how, who and when to use texting.  Below are a few rules I have put together for newbie texters.

Don't text w/o permission- I always suggest you ask clients and friends if it is OK before texting.  They may not be familiar with using text or they maybe be annoyed by the process.  In addition depending on what service provider they use, there might be charges for them that result from incoming text.  In regards to your business, never text to someone you don't know.  Unsolicited texting falls under the Federal "Do not call" CAN-SPAM act.

Learn the lingo- Texting is all about fitting the most words into a max of 160 characters.  This is what makes texting valuable as a speedy and convenient form of communication.  You will want to be familiar with shorts cuts such as NM (never mind), NIMBY (not in my backyard), DLTBBB (don't let the bed bugs bite)...etc.  From more common text lingo go to www.webopida.com

Be considerate- Texting to can quickly become addicting.  When visiting with friends, family and colleagues, put down your phone/PDA.  Don't be absorbed with reading text, emails and sending out replies.  Frankly it's just rude.  Turn off that ringer and "be present" in the moment.

Set limits - When you encourage others to text you unknowingly imply that you are always available and ready for a quick response.  Set limits and life expectations.
